SOS
Baits - Loaded with Lard
Everyday
something new comes to BassDigest about a new
bait or a new hand pour by a small company that
wants to make an impression. Some of these baits
you'll see on the market and others will just go
away quietly as they came. As a staff member
recently visited some southern waters in Alabama,
on his return came packs of baits by the company
we are doing a review on.
The SOS
bait company out of Alabama puts a soft plastic
line out that is just caked with anise and hog
lard. These baits are literally swimming in the
scent. Being a pro fisherman, I believe scents
can be the key to pushing the scales. Bass that
just wouldn't bite, take the scented lures.
The smell
of licorice (anise) came as a pleasant reminder of
a season in '98 when all I threw on my jigs,
worms and plastics in general held the scent of
anise. Of course, we had to field test the bait
and give it a day in the sun. We tested out a 4
inch finesse worm , a spider grub and a 6 inch
split tail worm (forked like a snakes tongue).
Each lure
was soaked in the special sauce just waiting for
use. Throughout the month of July we have had
countless opportunities to use this bait in and
out of tournament use. The conclusions from the
bait were good. The bait has excellent durability
for a soft plastic, lifelike actions and the
smell was abundant. Rigged on a mushroom jig the
finesse worm worked well in the weed flats. The
spider grub worked with a ninja jig fished
adjacent to rock humps found some nice wandering
fish looking for a meal. The biggest comment I
have about these baits it the fish thumped hard
and never let go.
Each fish
was hooked and hooked good. For colors and
